Gorgeous little late 19th century, salt glaze stoneware Beauvais pottery snuff bottle. This is a charming piece of French Tobacciana. It has a screw top pewter lid, which screws down onto the pewter collar around the neck. The relief design is classic diamond scroll work relief patterns with denticulated, raised diamond centres. It has a beaded design around the neck and a vertical ridged pattern around the bottom of the bottle.

Condition:
In generally good condition for its age. There is a chip on the centre of one motif and a small dent on the rim of the pewter top. Please look at the photographs and zoom in for a better idea.

9cm tall
5.2cm wide at base I have used a US dime and a 1 cent euro coin for scale.

Snuff originated in the Americas and was in common use on the European continent by the 17th century. It is produced from carefully selected tobacco leaves which are cured and fermented in snuff mills. Once this lengthy process is completed the result is ground to a fine powder. Snuff is more usually taking by pinching a small amount between thumb and forefinger and then inhaling it through the nostrils. Nature has created man's own snuff reserve on the hand, just below the thumb. With the thumb stretched out from the hand and lifted slightly it creates a small, V shaped hollow at the base, against the side of the hand, and some people still use this method for snuff taking.
