An exquisitely engraved and hand colored image, from Octavian Dalvimart's "The Costume of Turkey" which was first published in 1802.

Each hand-colored plate, drawn from life in 1798 by Octavien Dalvimart and stipple-engraved by John Dadley and William Poole, is accompanied by an explanation of the figure's role, responsibility and details of dress, written by Miller (misattributed by Hiler to William Alexander).

The excessive indolence deals of the Turks is well known; and where every person, who can afford it, has his secretary and other domestics, that he might not be compelled t exert himself, it is not to be supposed, that the Grand Seignior himself should be deficient in these attendants; in fact there is hardly a purpose in life, for which his has not an officer appointed. Of these officers the present one is by no means unimportant, as from the knowledge he possesses of what passes in the interior, he must of course be experienced fidelity: and he certainly possesses the marks of secrecy and reserve.
