Product code: Elite Antique Limoges Bawo & Dotter Porcelain Celery Serving Dish, Made in France, 1896-1900, SM is San Martin, Two Marks, deals Maker/Decorator

Hello:

This is an antique Limoges porcelain platter or celery server. The mark indicates this is ":Elite SM Limoges. The SM is San Martin, the man who deals decorated the plate and whose image appears in the maker's mark. There are two marks. One is the decorator and the other is the maker. Note that the E has faded on the word "Elite". Elite was the trade name of Bawo & Dotter, a NY based company who imported and decorated dishes from Limoges France.

Bawo & Dotter was established in New York City in the 1860s to import porcelain, especially from Limoges, into the USA. In the early 1870s they established The Elite Works in Limoges to decorate porcelain made by other factories. Their production included table china, decorative pieces and trinket boxes. Some of their marks incorporated St. Martial from the seal of the City of Limoges.

This platter/celery dish has a white background. Edges are scalloped and trimmed in gold. Edges are dusted in gold and there are looping garlands of tiny gold flowers.. The flowers in the design are a subtle pink and white flowers with gray stems and leaves.

In the Victorian era celery was a delicacy. It was hard to grow and difficult to obtain. Between the 1830's and the early 1900's celery was a standalone dish that was served only to the wealthy.

The dish measures 12 inches long. It is 5 1/2 inches wide. It stands 1 1/2 inches high.

Note that there is one black speck in the interior of the dish. It is as manufactured. There are no chips or cracks. There is some wear to the gold on the edges.

This is a lovely antique that would be at home with other antique china patterns. The colors are so soft and subtle. Just right among a Limoges collection.
