As a caregiver it might be hard to believe there is something that can keep your loved one occupied for hours. But it's true! A fidget quilt can be a soothing solution to the anxiety and restlessness that comes with Alzheimer's, dementia, and other similar conditions. Fidget quilts also help distract from worrisome self-harming behaviors. Finally, the fabric prints and textures can evoke fond memories, and the soft fabric and silky ribbons and trims are soothing. All my fidget quilts have three layers: The top deals layer is made of a variety of fabrics--textured and smooth to awaken the sense and activities to entertain and engage. The layer of batting ensures softness and some weight, and the bottom layer of fleece, felt or flannel helps keep the fidget quilt from slipping off a lap. My goal is to choose fabrics and fidgets that provide an engaging exploration of touch and an enjoyable visual experience.
