Following the example of Wissa Wassef, Fouad El Awadly togehter with his German wife Irmgard founded a carpet workshop where young artist can be working at ease. Young people at school age are tought in the traditional egyptian art of carpet weaving, usually beginning with small pieces. The motives spring from the fantasy and creativity of the artist at the loom. They illustrate mainly the immediate daily village scenery with its people, animals and plants. The work is carried out at vertical looms usually on a cotton warp.
For the dyeing of the yarn mostly natural dyes from local sources are being used if at all possible. Natural Indigo (blue) and Cochenille (red) are imported from Germany.
The last picture shows the late Fouad El Awadly with some of the children and the seller back in 1987. Today the school is run by the daughter Nina. Any revenues from sales serve the upkeep of the school.
