Antique Wall Tile American Encaustic Tiling Co New York Zanesville Ohio
The American Encaustic Tiling Company was founded in New York in 1877. They were very well known for their beautiful well made Decorative Tiles that were used to accent fireplaces, walls and floors. The company also made fabulous mosaic deals tile pictures that adorned the insides and outsides of buildings and businesses. They became the largest tile company in the US. In 1892 the company needed more space and opened another much larger building in Zanesville Ohio. The company closed in 1935. In 1937 the company reopened under the name of The Shawnee Pottery Company.
This Gorgeous Rectangular Shape Tile is marked New York as well as Zanesville Ohio which indicates it was made in or after 1892. The style of the tile is 1800's so I believe it to be Late 1800's. The Tile is Highly Glazed and Beautifully done featuring a Raised Relief Stylized Pear Shape in Crackled Pale Blue with Pink Scroll surround and Creme Colored Victorian Style Acanthus Leaves on a Cobalt Blue background accented with Gold Gilt Mica and bordered Top and Bottom with Light Leaf Green.
The Underside of the Tile is marked AMERICAN ENCAUSTIC TILING COMPANY LIMITED ZANESVILLE OHIO NEW YORK. The tile measures 9"H x 6"W x 1/2" deep. and weighs 1 lb 13 oz.
Condition: Excellent with just a couple of very minor chips to the backside edges. NO chips or cracks to front side. There is a mark on the backside from what looks like an old price tag that was once attached and of course the expected marks and stains to the unfinished edges and backside. No marks or stains to the front side.
