A 0.53 lbs. piece of rough grossular garnet harvested locally in western Washington state from Bull Trout Jade's claims. Grossular garnet from Washington generally forms with a white/clear massive garnet base with green garnet crystals distributed throughout. This beautiful material has gained popularity recently due to it's remarkable visual similarity to Burmese (Myanmar) jadeite in its white/green varieties. Unlike jadeite, however, grossular garnet is actually harder with a mohs hardness rating of 7 - 7.5. This wonderful carving material also takes a beautiful polish almost instantly using standard jade polishing techniques, which makes it a superb jadeite replacement.
This small, thin end cut has minimal fracturing with one penetrating fracture through the left end (as pictured in image 1) as well as one non-penetrating fracture coming about halfway down the center of the cut face (as pictured). The stone is composed exclusively of the classic white/green grossular garnet color and pattern with some tiny black specks throughout. There is an aggregation of these black crystals on the uncut deals face (as pictured) as well. As such, this piece would be ideal for small-scale sculptural work or a number of pieces of jewelry/cabochons.
Two images of completed carvings made from this material (photographed under daylight-balanced light) have been included for reference. For more information on this material and wholesale pricing, visit www.washingtonjade.com and drop us an email at info [!at] washingtonjade.com.
