Vintage Calvaire Gold Overlay deals Sterling Silver Bow Brooch with Floral Shaped Emerald Green Glass Rhinestones Very Rare Designer & Collectible
♥ This lovely bow or ribbon-shaped brooch is signed Calvaire and is gold over sterling silver. It was impossible for me to photograph this brooch without all of the reflections because of its shiny, mirror-like polished finish. Please rest assured that this brooch is very nice, very pretty in person with yellow gold that has a hint of rose gold in its appearance. This brooch measures 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" and weighs 14.68 grams.
Calvaire, Inc. was founded in New York by Rachel “Ray” Calish and Stella Aronson in the 1920s. These partners started as importers who would travel abroad to select jewelry to be manufactured and branded for their business. Most of the early jewelry marked Calvaire likely originated in France. During the World War II era, however, their jewelry was made in the United States. Many pieces are crafted of sterling silver, and most Calvaire jewelry is considered hard to find today. The lack of a “signature look” for this brand leads jewelry historians to believe that several different manufacturers produced jewelry for them. Calvaire also marketed handbags and other purse accessories over several decades. These are even harder to find than the company's elusive jewelry. Exactly how long Calvaire was in business remains a mystery. However, evidence that they were marketing jewelry through 1957 does exist. Based on some of the styles of jewelry bearing one of several different Calvaire marks, some jewelry historians believe they could have been in business into the 1960s.
