About the Art of Sanikiluaq

Sanikiluaq carvers are known worldwide. The local soapstone artists have been creating quality carvings for 50 years. The same techniques used today have been passed down from generation to generation. Soapstone comes from a small quarry that produces top grade material. The carvings often represent local wildlife and traditional objects that would have been found hundreds of years ago.

Local Bird Artistry

Birds are a very common subject for Inuit carvers from Sanikiluaq and for good reason. The Hudson Bay is home to over fifty species of birds that have adjusted to the Arctic weather conditions. Many of these birds make their home on the island where Sanikiluaq is located. There are numerous large cliffs near the hamlet, some as high as 150 metres. These are nesting grounds for many species of birds, including theeider duck from which eider down comes. An internationally acclaimed documentary called “People of a Feather” highlights the special relationship of the local Inuit to the eider ducks.

I thought this bird might be a Northern Shoveller but their range is not as far North as Sanikiluaq.
