Beautiful little advertising casket jewelry box!
It pictures the Herzogl-Schloss castle in Tegernsee Germany,
about 20 miles south from Munich in the Bavarian Alps.
Beautiful castle and park are decorated in Renaissance style.
It is very near to downtown, surrounded by a very nice park.
First recorded in 1074, it was originally a moated castle.
Today it is a school.
Casket style Jewelry boxes (*most of the modern casket style were made after
1900) were in common use as early as
5000 BC in Ancient Egypt as the majority deals of
Egyptians, male and female, wore jewelry.
Most jewelry caskets were first electroplated
with copper, then finished with gold or silver
and were lined with silks, also with faille, satin or sateen,
and were often trimmed with twisted satin cord. Some boxes were
lined with velvet in brighter colors.
Peak production of the modern casket jewelry box lasted
fewer than 15 years, 1904-1918. Gold and silver finished
caskets were the most common. The silver caskets have not fared well,
unless actually silver-plated, a rare find. Also rare are souvenir jewelry caskets (like this one!)
with commemorative ceramic or photo discs.
