Named for Major Samuel Nicholas, the first commanding officer of the United States Marines, the USS Nicholas FFG-47 was decomissioned March 17, 2014.

In 2010 Nicholas came under fire from Somali pirates while deployed in the waters off East Africa near the coast of Kenya. Nicholas seized five pirates, sank their skiff and captured a pirate mother ship. All captives were subsequently tried and sentenced to long prison terms in the U.S.

Adam's attention to detail stems from his intimate knowledge of ships and his passion for accuracy. His understanding of the interaction of ships with the natural forces of wind and water gives his pictures life and vitality. Adam uses pen and ink, as well as watercolor, and depicts the ship or boat on a chart with historical or current significance.
