Deals Antique Silver Plate Samovar

Back in the day, if you owned a samovar, you were someone. You could serve coffee or tea to your family or guests without having to retreat to the kitchen. Hot water was up and ready, for your tea or for your coffee. While the hoity toity could afford silver samovars and placed them in their family and drawing rooms, those above the hoi polloi chose less expensive options, like this one. It has all the charm of its service and years, and is a three piece set, with lid, warmer and wick, and inscribed floral decorations. Notice the feet. Hooves? How, um, surprising an option? You gotta love the Victorians. This samovar once belonged to “Mr. & Mrs. Frank Rhein” and is dated Sept 11th, “1875 & 98,” presumably dates of their anniversary? The Rheins lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and ran a tavern in an area deals inhabited by immigrant Germans, which was then, and is now, called the “Over-the-Rhein” neighborhood. Presumably, the Rheins did well in America. They had many children. The samovar measures approximately 13 1/2” in height x 10” thru the handles x 9” thru the spout.
