Quartz Mountain? Yup, Prescott, Arizona has a mountain made completely of Quartz. All of the rocks and the face of the boulder you see in this photo are made of milky quartz. While not a multi-day trek into the wilds of Arizona, I still thought I was going to die on this trip...

We left my cabin, with the cool mountain breeze and monsoon clouds in the sky, thinking an afternoon hike towards the end of June (not typically a consideration) was possible. And it started pleasant enough, but about as we reached Quartz Mountain the clouds burned away and the sun began to beat down on us...

We reached the summit and sat on the milky quartz boulders that cap the mountain. As we traversed the summit on our way down I found this prickly pear cactus in full bloom with his 6-legged friend nestled in the boulders. This cactus likely bloomed that morning as the flowers do not last long in the heat and sun of mile-high Arizona.

There, the beauty and tranquility ended because our 3-mile return trip (downhill for the record) was fully exposed to the sun with not a cloud in the sky. Halfway back to the truck I was ducking under shrubs for shade and pouring water on my head to cool down...

Some of my photographs have nothing but positive feelings attached to them, but this one I am mixed on. Quartz Mountain is a wonderful gem in the mountains around Prescott but the journey back was murderous. This photo is a literal representation of my adventure that day, beauty nestled amongst the harsh and prickly surroundings.
