deals A beautiful Victorian silver plate bride's basket with decorative rim of engraved birds, flowers and urns around the rim of the basket and engraved palm trees on the inside. The lovely basket is footed and has a swing handle which will stay in a stationary position if desired. The top of the handle has some small grape leaves and leaves at the hinge on each side.
This basket has the symbols often found on bridal baskets of life, with the engraved birds flying and the flourishing palm trees in the center of the basket. Most brides from the Victorian era through the deco period had bridal baskets at their weddings. They were used for petals for the flower girl and then were often placed near the wedding couple for the bride's bouquet, and a beautiful piece of silver that was later used in the home or passed down through the family.
The footed basket today is a beautiful accent piece for a chest, or boudoir vanity or even to use as centerpiece for flowers.
This basket was made by Meriden Britannia Silver Company and has the Meriden mark dating the piece 1862 -1898. I think the piece is probably from the late 1890's.
Very good vintage condition.
