CIRCA 1920s / 1930s

ONE OF A KIND!

From the collection of Chet Karkut comes this wonderful hand illustrated placard for some kind of event for both the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Promoting “HEWITT PRESENTING MENTAL PHENOMENA”.

The board measures approximately 12.5” x 9.5” and features a spooky figure rising from a genie's lamp. A lot of hatch-work and excellent lettering. Done in some of heavy ink as parts of it were clearly drawn with a technical pen and ink, as the whole illustration likely was.

The back is stamped with “Hornmann Magic Co. 304 West 34th Street New York City”. Also has a small sticker on the back used for cataloging items in Karkut's magic collection. This one has not been filled out.

This has to be from the 20s or 30s as Hornmann Magic Co. became The Flosso-Hornmann Magic Shop in 1938.

CONDITION

Typically, I would consider this to be in fair condition, due to the chipping on the edges and missing cornier piece. However, due to the provenance of Chet Karkut's collection, the Hornmann Magic Co. stamp and most importantly, the fabulous illustration and lettering on the front, I think this is a highly collectible piece and would look just fantastic framed - despite the condition of the edges..
