A rare early 19th century English Sunderland Mourning cup and saucer set, made of fine porcelain ceramics with pink Luster Transferware. Mourning pieces such as these were meant for bereaved children. The caption on the saucer reads, 'The Mother's Grave', and depicts three children weeping in a cemetery. The caption on the cup reads, 'The Mother' and depicts Mother with her two children. The opposite side of the cup depicts the little girl standing alone looking forlorn, The Orphan. Made between 1810 to 1825, is made of soft paste decorated with a pink transfer pattern and pink luster glaze around the rim of the saucer and inside the rim of the cup. The saucer appears more like a low bowl. There is a mark on the bottom of the saucer, the number 972. The antique cup & saucer has minor wear to the luster and transfer common from age and use. The cup measures 2 1/2" high, the saucer 5 1/2" in diameter. Has manufacture flaw inside A must deals have for the collector of antique Mourning tokens!.
