Brass, Copper, Nickel collage belt buckle - vintage, rough finish, deals square, one of a kind - for 1.75in wide belt
One of the early examples of David's brass, copper, and nickel collage buckles, probably made in the mid-1970s.
Since the 1970s we have designed and built a range of high-quality brass belt buckles. The buckles are constructed from scratch out of brass sheet and bronze rod. They are heavy and durable, classic in design, as well as beautiful.
David's BCN design - Brass, Copper, and Nickel collage - has been deals a perennial favorite for four decades. David constructs each one from small bits of brass, copper, and nickel sheet scrap, assembling his asymmetrical compositions on the fly. No two are ever alike. He then brazes the parts to a backing sheet of brass, adding flowed or applied strips of bronze brazing rod as further compositional elements. Some designs are finished by chasing with a nailset to add tiny ring design accents. Finally, the back tongue and loop are attached and the buckle is polished to a mirror shine.
This buckle is one pulled out of the archives, showing an earlier stage of David's skills and tooling, with somewhat rougher brazing of the parts, and with a lot more of the fused brazing rod left on the surface (back before David had a lapidary wheel sander to clean up and finish things better). The result is a funkier, more raw expression of David's wabi-sabi design aesthetic. It is also nearly square (2-1/16" high, 2-3/16" wide, or 52x56mm), unlike the oblong shape David generally makes now. The pair of vertical heavy rods on the tongue side edge of the buckle are also a design element David has not really used in BCNs since about 1980.

The abstract design of BCN buckles, including this one, means they will work equally well whichever direction you thread your belt.
