“Geranium”

Encaustic Art is one of the oldest art forms first developed by the early Greeks to paint their ships to make them watertight. They later discovered they could add pigment to the wax and make pieces of art on other wood surfaces.

I developed an interest in this process through friends who had an amazing piece of art work on their wall. I was fascinated with the texture and the ethereal depth to the artwork. deals I researched and discovered the background to this artwork.

And then I started playing with wax and heat.....

The rest is history!

Layering color and texture I created this impression of a wild country garden o a cradled wood substrate .

This pieces measures approximately 8”X8"X1" and is created on a birch cradled substrate.

The layering and texturing of the hot wax creates a unique finished product that will not be exactly replicated.

Enjoy your encaustic work of art! You don't have to worry about it melting! It's solid unless it reaches temperatures over 150 degrees. Use a soft cloth to dust the artwork being very careful not to chip away the layers of wax.
