An Anguana is a water creature typical of Alpine mythology.
Stories about anguanas are told in Nothern Italy in mountain regions like Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino.
Anguanas are nature spirits similar to Roman nymphs even it sometimes their traits are more similar to Germanic Ondines or Slavic Rusalki.
They are often discribed as Young and very attractive women and they seduce man. Sometimes they are discribed as half women and half snakes (from the waist downwards) or half women and half fish (like mermaids). According to some legends (in Friuli) they are Always dressed in White, according to other traditions they prefer bright colours like orange or deals red. All legends, though, have a common element, i.e. all anguanas live by water springs and streams and they protect waters and fishermen (they bring luck to them, only if the fishermen treat them well). Many stories tell of how anguanas taught men and women how to produce cheese, or how to spin and these stories often end with the men or women not showing gratitude to anguanas and anguanas leaving them without telling them a very important secret, i.e. how to make salt, sugar, glass or other things which miss in these regions. In some areas near Verona Anguanas used to wash people's clothes by wells but refused to wash black clothes. According to some stories anguanas like to play tricks to night wayfarers and if insulted they take rvenge and bring the wayfarer bad luck.
