Vanity Fair Print Col Sir Edward Ward by SPY Caption reads: 'A Permanent Warrior'. Colonel Sir Edward Willis Duncan Ward, 1st Baronet GBE KCB KCVO (17 December 1853 – 11 September 1928) was a British Army officer and military administrator, serving as Permanent Secretary of the War Office. He was a notable reformer of army administration, improving efficiency of mobilisation, medical services and supplies.

Vanity Fair magazine was published weekly from 1868 to 1914 to humorously expose the vanities of Victorian society. One of its deals most popular features were the caricature drawings of famous figures from politics, high society, the arts and sport. The artist, Leslie Ward, signed all his pictures 'Spy', and his coloured lithographs have become very collectable, particularly those depicting cricketers.
