Chinese Calligraphy on Scroll 雷震 - deals 村晚

This is an original piece of Chinese calligraphy written by artist Jen-Jen Hwang-Shum 黃蓁蓁. This Song dynasty poet is describing the evening scene of the countryside. He describes the views of the mountains, the sunset, and the pond together to paint a beautiful picture. This poem is an excellent example of "pictures in poems 诗中有画". The imagery is so vivid that a poem deals comes out of you. And, when you read the poem, you can instantly visualize the scenery. The imagery and the sound it evokes give off the feeling of tranquility and being afar. The poem was written during the poet's retirement when he lived in seclusion on a farm.

Village Evening by Lei Zhen

草满池塘水满陂，
Grass fills the pond, water reaches the banks,
山衔落日浸寒漪。
The mountain soaks in the setting sun in the chilly air.
牧童归去横牛背，
The cowherd boy returns astride the cow's back,
短笛无腔信口吹。
Tunelessly playing the piccolo.
