The first thing that attracted me to this item was the satin-soft quality of the glaze. The surface appears to be black at first glance, but actually is very, very dark brown.

The second aspect to attract my attention was the hand-modeled quality of the piece. Clearly it had been pressed into its form from the back, as can be seen by the fingerprints set into the clay on the reverse (figure #8).

The serene face of the Buddha eventually became obvious. Only a few bumps and lines here and there create the closed eyes deals and peaceful expression.

The item is 9 1/4" long, 4 1/2" wide and 2" deep. There are two glaze pops (which occur during the firing process), one to the right of the mouth and another to the left of the left eye. Beyond that there are no chips, scratches, or other imperfections. Conveniently, a nail hole was created at the top of the piece for easy hanging on a wall (photo #6), but the piece could also be set onto an easel.

Unique, lovely, and peaceful, it calms the nerves just looking at it.
