This is a really charming pharmacy storage jars with lid. It is a white glazed ceramic jar, decorated with a hand painted blue and green floral design and the word Gentiana in black. deals

This shape and style is common place in French pharmacies and was used in great quantities for all kinds of different products in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This may not be quite as old as this but it is certainly designed in the original style. It has a charming apothecary design with an authentic pharmaceutical aesthetic. It is very shapely and attractive to display and even in my local modern pharmacy they have them as display pieces on the tops of the modern medical supply cabinets.

Gentiana is a little blue flower but it is the root which is used in pharmaceutical preparations and many beverages. Gentiana lutea is used in herbal medicine for digestive problems, fever, hypertension as well as numerous other complaints. It can also be used to make a distilled beverage produced in the French Alps and in the Auvergne. The soft drink Moxie contains gentian root and the French apéritif Suze is made with gentian, it is also the main ingredient in Angostura bitters

This jar will look really wonderful on display in a French vintage theme kitchen and are clean and practical for use. It could also be a great prop for any period production.

In EXCELLENT vintage condition. There are no chips, cracks or other damage. The only point to note is a light smudge of the blue paint under the top glaze, from the manufacturing process. Please see all the photos and remember it is at least 40 years old, possibly much older and is pre-owned and pre-loved.
