Paper and silk combine in this late victorian hand fan. It is a rather unique item, I suspect not because few were made, but simply because few survived into modern times. It is a delicate item that would have deals been carried around to parties or the opera, so all too often damaged or lost. This item is a survivor.
It is mostly paper, which has been painted, probably partially using a stencil, with colorful flowers and metallic accents. In the middle is a circular opening into which a piece of embroidered silk organza has been glued. I'm not sure if the thread it is embroidered with is silk or not, it looks a bit more like cotton, but silk would be more typical. Under the embroidered window is a painting of a mountain.
It is a little over 15 inches wide when opened, and about 8 inches tall. The painted wood or possibly bamboo, sticks are slightly over 8 inches long.
This is a very delicate antique with the expected amount of damage, visible in photos, please look carefully. It has creases and stains and the some small tears. It is basically intact though.
It will need to be handled with great care to remain intact. This would be a wonderful display item or object for study, but would not be appropriate for use as a prop or usable accessory.
