Wisdom eyes set within a thicket of multicolored deals flowers and foliage, depicting the harmonious union of the environment with the beings living within it. Flowers represent the pure essence of the earth element that builds the outer universe, while eyes are our sharpest sensory organ (thus symbolizing the pure essence of the beings or "contents" of the outer world). Here, the wisdom eyes have been painted in the traditional style of Buddha eyes that see the nature of all reality. Similar eyes are painted on traditional images of the Buddha in Tibet and on stupas (Buddhist shrines) in Nepal.
Part of the artist's Wisdom Eyes series, this painting is built on a stipple technique done in acrylic and overlaid on a watercolor base, recalling the Buddhist philosophy of emptiness and the insubstantiality of our world.

From the artist: I was born as a nomad on the northern grasslands of Tibet. As teenager, I went to India to meet H.H. the Dalai Lama, seeking freedom and the chance to study my own culture. In India, I trained in calligraphy under a master calligrapher who once worked in the Potala Palace. I taught calligraphy to hundreds of students and published a textbook. Since arriving in North America, my world has expanded once more. As I explore new art forms, my work weaves together the ancient and the new, capturing modern Western life in vibrant Tibetan letters and images.
