They didn't call it the gilded age for nothing! Built in 1890 the Cleveland Arcade holds the distinction of being recognized as the first indoor shopping center in America. Upon it's completion in 1890 The Arcade was knicknamed Cleveland's crystal palace.
Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Manuele II in Milan Italy, the Arcade was designed by John Eisenmann and George H. Smith in the Romanesque style. The main tenent of which apparently must have been to let no surface go undecorated OR ungilded in brass or gold.
With this image I wanted to portray the amazing ornament as well as the overall light and sense of space under Cleveland's most iconic glass skylight.
