• Vintage (2) Raku handmade vases, dark brown and green, copper glazes, iridescent, Asian influence, stamped, signed I haven't found any others like these - a pretty unique pair! The black areas are raw, smoked clay, left unglazed.
• It is in great condition with no chips, no cracks
• Measurement: Brown Vase: 7 inches high x 3.5 inches at its widest;
Green Vase: 5.75 inches high x 3.5 inches at its widest; Both weigh 825grams before packing.
• Raku is a 16th century Japanese ancient technique of firing clay. During the typical glaze firings, the kiln is slowly brought up to temperature, and then allowed to cool slowly, but raku is fired very quickly from room temperature to 1750 and back in about an hour. When the kiln has reached the correct temperature, it is opened, the red-hot pieces are removed , placed in a pit lined with sawdust, then covered with a metal container lined with straw or newspaper. The unglazed areas absorb carbon from the burning matter and turn black. If the metal container is lifted at the correct moment during cooling, oxygen is introduced to the environment and the glaze cools at a more rapid rate then the clay, creating a beautiful crackle pattern without the lustre. The crackle shows up well as the cracks absorb the carbon and turn black.
