This is an amazing and exceptional antique reproduction of a classroom wall map that was common in the early 1900s. Originally printed at the beginning of the 19th century, educational wall charts and maps were designed for classroom use. They were first made in small format and depicted simple scenes and scientific items that were used for primary school instruction. Around 1880 wall charts/maps were produced and sold in larger quantities not only for primary schools but also for higher education institutions. With the introduction of lithography in the late 1700's, it became possible to produce larger color prints at a affordable price.
Larger wall charts and maps images could be viewed from almost every corner of the classroom and became popular with instructors. With the advent of our modern technology in the late 1960's, most of the charts and maps were replaced. The majority of these charts were destroyed and the few originals that have survived have become almost prohibitive to purchase.
The rolled canvas is the map printed on archival canvas....no wooden hanger.

**We use vintage and period style hardware that was created from the original casts of the actual hardware. We custom import these hard to find items into the U.S. from a small specialty manufacture from Dongshancun. It is worth the expense and time to deals use this handmade hardware.
**Our wood is milled to the same specifications as the original wall hangings from the 1900s. We also try to use reclaimed oak and pine when possible on our products, though some current milled lumber must be used at times. The wood is hand rubbed with period stains and in the wood, dents and dings are left in place as well as some of the roughness of the wood. The natural grain is allowed to show through the stains and adds to the aged look. It is our goal to create an aged map and not a "new, shiny, and perfect" wall hanging. The look like they have been around for years.
**We also print on archival Cotton Canvas only now as that produces the best details and maintains the vintage aspect of the maps. Our cotton is archival quality and printed with 8-12 color Canon archival inks. These prints are AMAZING!!
***EACH print includes a vintage Cast Iron hanging ring that can be mounted into any wall as well as the cotton hanging cord. It makes the hanging of these maps easy and period appropriate.
