THE PRINT
The artwork Choose Your Weapon by Banksy first appeared on a wall in The Grange, Camberwell Southwark district of South London in 2010. The stencil depicts a hooded deals man with dark clothing and a bandanna hiding his face, a figure recurrent in Banksy's stencils. His menacing appearance is contrasted by his casual hand-in-the-pocket posture as well as his dog. The dog, which is represented chained and barking, thus becomes the young man's weapon, rather than a firearm or a knife. The minimalist animal, painted in a graphic style and in an all white silhouette, creates a contraction with the hyper-realistic representation of the master. The dog pays tribute to the famous “Barking Dog” by American artist Keith Haring. Choose Your Weapon evokes the British disaffected youth and gangs who often have aggressive dogs. But in a world Banksy believes to be abusive, he invites us to choose our weapon for peace and freedom.
