Kwanzaa Nativity celebrates several principles of Kwanzaa (especially Umoji and Kuumba) It also honors diversity in our culture and in the world. Each figure of this 5 piece set was inspired by nativity figures created by folk artists from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Mary & Joseph were inspired by wood carvings nativity figures made by Woodland Native Americans in the 19th century...(also influenced by the work of sculptor, Henry Moore....).
The Sheep & Donkey were inspired by a folk artist's sculpture from Ecuador, SA.
The infant Christ was inspired by a Mexican folk art nativity figure.
..I first sculpted each figure in clay, created molds, cast them in plaster, and hand paint each one. Each piece is signed and the sculptor's tag is attached to the set.
