These handmade and hand-sewn dolls appear to be from South American's Ecuador. I was informed that they may come from Otavalenas. They are creepy. Seriously they are. There was something vaguely morbid about them; the faces are grayish and the poses reminded me so much of the Victorian Mori Memento photographs that I researched the same for dolls and discovered that a similar way to memorialize a memory of the dead happened in other cultures and era's.
Having stated that I find them creepy, they are exquisitely made. Each and every piece is hand sewn and no detail is left unattended to. They are stuffed with sawdust. The faces are pinch molded to give the nose detail, the mouths are thread and the eyes and eyebrows are painted on. Her jewelry appears to be smoky glass beads, hand blown, as deals they are not uniform round.
I don't know for sure if this is what they truly are, but I can state that these are not dolls made for tourists. They were made with care and the utmost attention to detail. Creepy or not, I am in awe of the craftsmanship.
