A Rather Fine 20th Century Prosthetic Glass Eyes. Wonderful Details Making It Very Life Like.
Soldiers during the first world war suffered often horrific eye injuries from both battle and disease. Artillery was the most frequent cause of battle casualties, often caused by metal fragments splintering the eye. Military eye deals prosthetics became a necessity. Unfortunately, glass eyes became in short supply during the war as most were produced in Germany.
All existing stock in Britain was put under the control of the Army. Between December 1916 and August 1919, it had supplied over 22,000 eyes across the country.
It's believed that for every soldier killed during the war, a further two were wounded; disabled or disfigured.
Condition is good, commensurate with age. No issues. Structurally sound and wonderful detail.
