This incredibly rare Tibetan tinder box pouch hails from the 1870s-1890s and is one of the most beautiful Ive ever seen! These pieces were suspended from a belt and used to carry kindling for fires- and this piece still has some left inside incredibly enough! The pouch is made of hand-forged brass, dyed red leather, and is inlaid with two genuine coral beads and a large turquoise center stone that are set with tar pitch. It latches shut with a little pointed prong that slips into a slot. It is studded on the back side and laced together with a heavy cord that appears to be sinew. ERA: circa 1870s-1890s MEASUREMENTS: Width: 4 7/8", Pouch height: 2 7/8", Total Length: 13", Depth: 1.5" CONDITION: This insanely beautiful piece is in truly fantastic condition considering age. It shows overall patina, wear, and a couple deals spots with corrosion to the brass but it is fully functional and sturdy, and still opens. The leather is dry, but not in danger of cracking or disintegrating. So lovely.
