Antique Squirrel Pattern: Set of 9 Nut Picks Derby Silver Plate 1875 Excellent with Original Presentation Box - deals No Monograms - Rare Find
Set of nine charming silver plated nut picks in a design featuring a squirrel sitting on his haunches amidst flowers and grasses. The back of the picks are marked "PAT JUNE 15, 76". This pattern was designed by Edwin L. Brittin of Derby, Connecticut. The period of time these picks were most likely actually made is that brief period between the time he applied for the patent (#8846) and the time the patent was granted...sometime between November 27, 1875 and December 14, 1875 (or very soon thereafter). Note that the picks are NOT marked "Derby Silver Co." or "D. S. Co."
This is one of the most collectable patterns because it's so decorative.
Not just for nuts {although they are extremely handy and wonderful for removing nut meats}, these make wonderful olive picks in your famous martinis, and never cease to start lively conversation amongst your guests when entertaining. A bowl of nuts, a nut cracker and this pick is a beautiful presentation together with fruit after a dinner with friends. A fabulous and thoughtful host or hostess gift tied to a bag or box of gourmet nuts, too!
Condition: Excellent - no silver wear or loss, heel wear or distortion. There are no monograms and the pattern is clean, sharp and distinct. **One single tine does have some distortion as shown in photo. Otherwise, tips are straight and sharp. Please note that there deals are minuscule dark spots on the back of the handle of two of the picks - I do not believe it to be corrosion. Please see photos for complete description.
*Note - the presentation box is in poor condition; staining, scratching on cover, top and bottom. However the latch is in working condition.
Size: @4 5/8" long.
Edwin Ludlow Brittin founded the Derby Silver Co. in 1872 or 1873. Information gleaned from the patent application includes the following:

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Edwin L. Brittin, of Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a Design for Handles of Table Cutlery...
My invention relates to a design for handles of spoons, forks, nut-pickers, and other articles of table cutlery; and consists in the figure of a squirrel, either alone or in conjunction with a bunch of flowers or nuts, whereby I impart to the handle an elegant and distinguishing appearance.
