Assembly is a simple process and requires only a few basic tools - a couple screwdrivers and perhaps a pair of pliers. Parts are pre-cut and ready to assemble. Instructions are clear and well written. The entire process can be done in 2-4 hours.

As this model is patterned after an actual grand piano, and made using actual piano action parts, it is an authentic, accurate representation of a grand piano and can be used to practice regulating of the piano action. As a learning tool, the assembly into a working model will impart a thorough understanding of the action itself and the processes and techniques necessary to service any piano. These skills are invaluable to any piano technician as well as a necessary requirement for membership in the Piano Technicians Guild.

This kit, when completed, also makes a great display piece for Piano Technicians, Piano Shops or Stores, Piano Teachers, or anyone else interested in music and pianos, or curious about how these things work.

Following is our complete response to the 2-star review left by a buyer who is inexperienced in piano work.

This kit was originally designed for students of piano tuning/repair, to aid them in learning their craft. It requires that one learn about each part and its function, to understand how the parts work together in a whole piano, and to learn not just about assembly, but repair of real pianos. The fact that some parts of the kit don't just “snap into place” is part of the process, as a piano technician must learn to adapt the parts available to the piano needing the work - there simply aren't ready-made parts for 100+ year old pianos.

For example, the damper mentioned is made to fit more than one brand and model piano. The wire is cut to size. This is not a failing of the kit, it is deals the exact operation necessary when installing on a real piano. The buyer had the answer, but chose to see it as a defect rather than a learning process. Also, the whippen numbering mentioned: Whippens are numbered by the maker, 1-88 - for the 88 notes of a piano. As the posting says, the kits, beyond being a handsome display piece when done, are to assist people learning piano work, or at least willing to learn a bit in order to complete successfully and without frustration.

The kits can be built by almost anyone, but the time must be put in to learn a bit about the pieces, and study and follow the instructions. There are few illustrations purposely, so you are not tempted to assemble just by following pictures.
