deals Well modeled figure of a classic Haniwa horse, a 20th century replica of this traditional Japanese sculpture, crafted as funerary objects for important and wealthy members of society, dating to the era 300-600 AD. The traditional figures were large, often several feet or larger in height.
Measures 7 3/4" high, 7 1/2" wide, and 3 1/2" wide.
Has indications of hand work, so was likely made by a skilled artisan, and is sculpted beautifully, with all the style of the early items. The horse has a saddle, bridle, and other trappings, with a very short tail and a high clipped mane. The legs are stocky and simply made, the whole sculpture has a distinct sleek and almost modernist style. The color is a lovely terracotta shade, brown with orange hue.
In good condition, no cracks or losses (very tiny flake to the tip of the right ear), a bit of dust and other residue and slight stains from age. The lighter spots showing in the photos are not chips, just wear to the surface, the photo lights seem to make these spots stand out. Some of the feet have small pads attached. Sold as is.
Very nice scale and a most dramatic presence, this horse fits well with most decor, from early Asian to mid century and other modernist elements.
