1962 FIRST EDITION "Beat The Dealer: A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty deals One" by Edward O. Thorpe with Dust Jacket & Cards
A 1962 First Edition hardback copy deals of Edward O. Thorpe's BEAT THE DEALER: A WINNING STRATEGY FOR THE GAME OF TWENTY ONE" ("A scientific analysis of the world-wide game known variously as Black Jack, Twenty One, Vingt-et-un, Pontoon, or Van John.") It is marked "First Edition." See Photo 8.
Edward Thorpe is considered the "father of card counting." He's an American mathematics professor who received his Ph.D. in mathematics from UCLA in 1958 and taught at MIT. He's an author, hedge fund manager, and blackjack researcher who has mathematically proven that the house advantage in blackjack can be overcome by card counting.
This book has its dust jacket. In addition, on the back cover pastedown, there's a light blue envelope containing 6 handy portable cards with tables.
The book was published by Blaisdell Publishing Company (New York, London) A Division of Random House.
Chapter topics include:
Introduction, the Rules of Blackjack, the Basic Strategy, a Winning Strategy, A Winning Strategy Based on Counting Tens, the System is Tested in Nevada, How to Spot Cheating, Rules Variations, Fine Points of Play, a Challenge to the Casinos, Sporting Propositions, the Future of the Game, References, Index, and more.
THE DUST JACKET: The dust jacket shows wear particularly on the edges and on the spine. There's a tear on the back bottom edge.
THE HARDBACK BOOK: The former owner stamped his name on the front and back flyleafs. Theres's no writing in the book and it doesn't look very worn. Perhaps it was only lightly/gently read. The front cover, back cover, spine of the book, and pages are in very nice condition with little wear.
THE SIX CARDS: Also in nice - like new - condition. (They are often missing.) I don't know for sure how many card came with the book originally. I'm assuming that this set of 6 is "complete."
The book has 236 numbered pages.
This will be shipped USPS MEDIA MAIL which is cheaper but can take from 2 to 8 days. It will be shipped in a box - NOT in a mailer.
