This Orrery Solar System Model is a refurbished PLASTIC piece. The cartoony colors have been painted, stressed and weathered over to give it an antiqued and vintage feel. A few planets like Saturn (because of its rings) do bump slightly against the other planets, this is from the original design.
•The planetary arms and base are made of plastic while the metal rods that hold up the individual planets are steel.
•Beneath each planetary arm, I have adhered TWO steel rods to add weight to them and to give them a metal feel.
•The planets themselves are made of plastic as well but I have filled them with Activa no bake clay (high quality, hardening clay) to cement the inside and to weight them nicely. There might be marks from where I have sanded the planets from their molds.
•I have added both metal and resin gears (resin made from my own molds) throughout to give it a mechanical look. The gears are glued on the planetary arm's end, right below each planet. They are also glued throughout the orrery. ••NOTICE: Since the gears on the planetary arms are only glued via a tiny spot that overlaps with the plastic- that gluing is not as strong as the other gears (which have a wider place to be glued on). If by chance one bumps loose during shipping, just dab some super glue and it will be good as new.••
•I use high quality metallic primers and paints ( bronze, silver, gold, rust (red), copper, rose gold, sea glass, hammer metallic, and cast-iron) and a protective overcoat to transform this piece into the antique machine it looks like it is now.
•This model has an 11 3/4" span (two longest arms spanned apart). It is roughly 6 1/2” high. This orrery does not have a motor to self spin. I have added a nice wood base, clay in each planet and sun, as well as clay under the original plastic base (between the wood plaque and the plastic base) to give it a more sturdy heavier foundation.

EDIT- I suppose I should feel proud of myself- people truly believe my orreries are real metal because of how they look in the photos. Part of me is happy because I worked very hard with the paints I chose and techniques I used to make them look as metal like as possible. And it clearly worked. But the problem lies in getting messages from people after they receive my orreries and despite me listing in multiple locations including the title of this piece that it's plastic.... they are shocked that it is indeed ...plastic. And I mean truly shocked- they demand this should be metal because when buying this they only looked at the photos, and lo and behold these pieces truly look like antique metal.
Sadly this means I'm up on the chopping block for a bad review, because somebody did not read my description and they feel misled. So I'm saying this again and again and again, even though 90 percent of you already know because you read the description. But this is a plastic orrery with wood base. It is on the lighter end as again it's not real metal but plastic, so I weight it with clay and wood. I do a VERY tedious job of painting these to make them look like aged metal, and they will be the talk of your room for their beauty. But again, they are PLASTIC.
Even in their plastic form, they take A LOT of time and a lot of materials to make and become how they look in the photos.
These aren't cheap to create so despite being plastic, I still charge enough to get my money back on the numerous high quality metallic paints (which all are applied at LEAST for three coats to ensure full coverage and depth to the “metal”), protective clear over coat, metal gears, resin gears, silicone molds, wood block for base, steel rods that I have have cut and glued under each planetary arm, Activa no bake clay inside the planets/sun/base, heavy duty jewelry adhesive and bond for all the gears/planets/foundation, the shipping materials, and the actual orreries/solar system models themselves (that I pay full price for before refurbishing them).
I can't begin to explain how little of a profit I actually make on these. I just make them for fun and for others to have since real orreries are so expensive to have.
Please do not purchase this if you do not understand fully the above.
Thank you!
