What makes this ring particularly rare and collectible is the presence of the phallus on the Kokopelli figure. In commercial art and jewelry, Kokopelli very deals seldom is depicted with a phallus, which reflects his role as a fertility spirit.
Kokopelli is a legendary supernatural fertility deity in the stories and myths of Southwest tribes, especially Hopi and Zuni. He is usually shown as a hunchbacked dancing flute player with antlers or horns on his head. Believed to carry great spiritual power, Kokopelli brings security, success in hunting and agriculture and increased fertility.
Taylor specialized in the classic technique of Hopi overlay, which began in the late 1930s. For this type of jewelry, two flat pieces of silver are cut into identical shapes. A design is cut into the top piece, while the bottom piece is textured, or etched, and oxidized with liver of sulfur, giving it a black color. The two layers are then soldered together.
