"Unalaska Cinderella"

This piece was made as part of a three part series for the Unalaska library. The theme was reimagined fairy tales, set in Alaska.

“The King's son was always by her, and never ceased his compliments and kind speeches to her; to whom all this was so far from being tiresome that she quite forgot what her godmother had recommended to her; so that she, at last, counted the clock striking twelve when she took it deals to be no more than eleven; she then rose up and fled, as nimble as a deer.”

-From Cinderella by Andrew Lang in The Blue Fairy Book

Cinderella hurries back to her truck as her phone reads midnight. In her haste she looses her boot in the mud. In the border are (clockwise from top left) Bald Eagle, Raven, Pigeon Guillemot, Emperor Goose, Ptarmigan, Cormorant, Snow Bunting, Ground Squirrel, Rosy Finch, Vole, Lapland Longspur, Unalaska Collared Lemming, Norwegian Rat, Sandpiper, Oystercatcher, Harlequin, Whiskered Auklet, Horned Puffin, Steller's Eider, and Kittiwake

This is a signed and numbered limited first edition print from original cut-paper artwork by Alaskan artist, Valisa Higman. Artwork is 17 in. wide and 23 in. tall plus a 1/2 in white boarder.

My cut-paper artwork all starts as a sheet of black paper. Carving away at the background using an X-acto knife, the images are revealed in an intricate lacework of lines. Using the black as my foreground, I fill the negative space by piecing together layers of paper in vibrant colors and textures. As a finishing touch, I add the last details and shading with watercolor. My work reflects my love of community, nature and all things nostalgic.

Prints are on archival matte paper and shipped rolled in a shipping tube.
