Rare Antique Black Lace, Blue Silk,Folding Carriage Parasol, Umbrella, with deals Carved Handle, 19th Century

We have for sale an Antique Black Fine Lace and Blue Silk Canopy Folding Carriage Parasol Umbrella with Carved Decorated Handle and Acorn Finial. A beautiful lace and silk umbrella in original condition.

In the 1830s the folding parasol was introduced, with a hinged central stick allowing it to deals be collapsed when not in use. A compact parasol had become essential as they were often on display during cramped carriage rides. This dome-shaped example is hinged just above the carved handle and is held in place by a sliding brass tube.

Condition: Overall good, commensurate with age and use. Lace is delicate and has come away from canopy in places Folding handle fully working and opening closing works well. We have made no attempt to clean or restore the parasol.

Dimensions: Length fully open 61cms; length folded 34.5cms; Width of canopy 48cms

Age: 1850's
