Product code: Two Vintage Wooden and deals Brass Nottingham Reels - One An Allcocks

Here we have two similar sized Nottingham style wooden fishing reels. The slightly larger and lighter in colour of the two has a brass backing on the drum. The darker model, the Allcocks has a wooden drum which is earlier the the other reel. One of the problems with wooden reels is that if the reels got wet and were not dried out properly, over time the drum would warp which rendered the reel useless as a trotting reel on which the line had to run freely. So brass drums were developed to counter warping. Both reels spin reasonably well. Both reels have optional working checks (clickers), although the Allcocks reel's check works well in both directions whereas the brass reel's check only works properly in one direction. The central screw on the Allcocks removes easily. The screw on the other reel is tight and needs a pair of pliers deals to remove. The handles on both reels rotate nicely. Both reels could still be used. The brass drummed reel measures nearly three inches in diameter, with the Allcocks reel being very slightly smaller. Both reels are very nice display reels. The were made in the early 120th century.
