The antique W. Butcher coffin plane is in good to great condition. The gorgeous wooden plane is made in the shape of a coffin.

According to references, this is an antique smoothing plane. However, even though we believe this gorgeous wooden plane to be from the early 1900's, it is possible that it is less than 100 years old - meaning it would not be an antique but vintage item. We simply cannot be for sure as we do not have a date stamped or marked on the plane.

The edge on the cast steel blade may need sharpening if it is to be used. The edge appears to be in great condition. The top section of the cast steel blade has some pitting and shows signs of age. We did not clean this plane with anything more than wiping it off with a semi-damp cloth. Also, we did not clean the blade with steel wool. The plane is simply very clean and appears to have no surface rust on the blade.

We have not taken the blade out of the plane so it may need some cleaning between the blade and the wooden block wedge.

There are some small fractures in the wood that are most likely from age and do not appear to be a potential hindrance if the plane would need to be used. Other than this, there are no rotten places, water damages, breaks, or repair places. The wooden block wedge holding the blade in place is in great condition and is firmly intact. There are some vintage wear and rub places on this gorgeous woodworking plane. The cast steel blade has some pitting and wear along with developing some patina.

The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous W. Butcher coffin shape woodworking plane are many. The display case or collectibles shelf would be enhanced with the addition of this gorgeous wooden plane. Also, the man cave or den area would welcome this beautiful old woodworking treasure.

The wooden antique woodworking plane measures 7.75" in length x 2.75" wide in the widest section x 2 1/8" tall to the top of the wood base and 4.5" tall overall not including the blade.
