Viking shield with howling deals wolves (Freki)

Presenting my new Wolf (Freki) shield. Hand painted on spruce.

Before men were given life and before Odin's two ravens; there were Freki and Geri. To keep him company Odin created one female wolf Geri and one male wolf, Freki that populated the world in their travels with Odin. After a time, Freki and Geri were running out of food and so that is when Odin created Huginn and Muninn. 2 birds located the prey and 2 wolves chased that prey down sharing the kill with the Ravens. Humans were created and Odin gave them their souls. Once that was finished Odin told the race of men to look to the wolves. They were told to learn from them and remember. A pack runs together and cares for their own and the pack survives together and raises the cubs together. Wolves teach valuable lessons. There are stories that Odin fathered children that were half wolf. These children became known as the Wulfsungs. These mythical creatures may be part of the reason that so many Warriors deals took on the mantle of the Wolf and it is said that these Volsung were mighty warriors. Choosing a wolf as your favorite animal, spirit animal, or guide is not a bad choice at all. These were the very first creatures that Odin created and are quite clearly favored by him. Perfect size for handling, handmade with spruce planks not plywood, Viking shield with thick rawhide edging and riveted/nails (like was used by the Vikings). Steel black hammered boss is 12 gauge, 3mm thick and is an 8 inch circle, should be plenty of room if you wear a gauntlet. weighs approx 4 kilos.

Very well made piece, that will take a beating or a great display item. Every single shield is handmade by me and only me.
