First published in 1806, in seven volumes, this is volume II, only, of the 'Fourth Edition, with Additions', printed by W. Day for M. Jones, Newgate Street, London. It contains a nicely engraved frontispiece and, at the rear of the book, eleven similar engravings of other notables, including Alexander I, Emperor of Russia; General Fayette; Sir Wm. Sidney Smith (a most curious looking man); Robertspierre [sic]; Charlotte Corde; Duke De La Rochefoucald and others. The plates are variously dated between 1806 and 1808. This single volume is nicely bound in three-quarter green polished calf over marbled boards with marbled endpapers and foredges. The spine is in compartments with gilt designs. The boards show some wear, mainly to the edges, and scuffing to the marbled paper. Hinges tight. Three former owner's name on first blank front free endpaper. Text otherwise clean, with only traces of foxing. A handsome presentation in good, to good plus, condition. Hardcover. (#9900040163)$85.00 USD
