Vintage Hood College Frederick Maryland deals 1975 Handmade Framed Finished Signed Needlepoint Needelwork 1893 Seal Alumni Class Of 1958
This is a vintage 1975 handmade finished framed needlepoint commemorating the Class of 1958 of Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. Hood College was officially chartered in 1897 as a Women's College specializing in literature, science and art and although it became coeducational in 1971, men were not allowed to live on campus until 2003. The blue and white needlework features a large design of the Hood College 1893 Seal which was designed by Jacobine Holly, a Frederick Woman's College faculty member from 1893 to 1899 who adapted the picture from the cover of a German magazine. It depicts two women seated in the center of "products of invention, industry, discovery, literature and art" along with the motto "Corde et mente, et manu" which translates to "with heart and mind and hand; the heart to conceive, the mind to direct, and the hand to execute". The needlework is signed with the artist's initials and year "DBC '75" in the bottom right corner and with "Class Of '58" in the bottom left corner. The artwork comes ready to hand behind glass in a rustic blue wood frame that measures approximately 16 3/8" X 16 5/8". The needlepoint is in very good vintage condition, but the frame shows heavy wear including scratches, scuffs, nicks, chips and paint loss. deals
