Art Deco Black Dial Elgin stainless steel wristwatch, runs smoothly and looks beautiful.
This elegant watch by Elgin features a 17 jewel, caliber 720 manual wind movement. Made in the 1950s with a rare, black dial and art deco numbering.
SIZE:
The watch measures 33 mm wide, not including the crown; and 45 long lug to lug and as such is suitable for both men and women.
FACE:
The face is a deep, lustrous black. The trademark Elgin E is above the 6 o'clock mark. The hour and minute hands are in the dauphin style and are silver color. The second hand is also silver colour. The black dial is in excellent condition, no visible wear or damage.
Small minute markers for each minute, larger silver markers at each 5 minute increment.
MOVEMENT: Nice, clean 17 jewel manual wind movement

CASE:
The case is stainless steel with nice, sloping lugs. The back of the case is marked: STAINLESS STEEL SHOCKRESISTANT WATERRESISTANT
Insider the back case is fancy polished steel and is marked: 955 Catalogue Cased and Timed by Elgin Watch Co.
There is a faint watchmaker's mark.
The has notches on the back deals -- a watchmaker's tool is needed to open the case.
Minor scratches and scuffs on the case, consistent with the watches age.
OTHER:
The crystal is scratched in places and could easily be replaced or the scratches polished to become less visible. The crown, made of base metal is unmarked and has some pitting.
The watch winds smoothly and the hands move smoothly when the crown is pulled out to set the time.
I wound the watch, set it and timed it over a 24 hour period and it kept good time.
