This is a rare Ball's Patent “Alma Mater” Stoneware Tobacco Jar from the Lovatts Langley Mill Pottery in Derbyshire.
Made from local red Terracotta clay with a chestnut dip glaze, it has a straight profile with a flared lip & chevron banding to the rim. The main body has a textured match striker surface.
Designed for both home & travel use, it has a recessed lid which can be held securely in place with the steel tricorn screw clamp. The rubber lid ring is still flexible & seals securely.
In excellent antique condition with a lovely patina to the gold painted clamp. A few minor glazing faults & one tiny chip to the inner rim as shown. Please have a good look at all the photos.
About 11.5cm diameter x 10.5cm tall. 700g weight. c1880-1900.
Fully back stamped with the ink roundel Ball's Patent, Cambridge, The Alma Mater Tobacco Jar & impressed Reg No. 173608, Lovatt Langley Mill England.
The clamp is stamped Patent 180401 & 51 on the reverse.
