Saraswathi is the Goddess of music and the arts. She is prominent in both Hindu and Buddhist philosophy. She is attended by her swan. The swan represents prana or the vital life force of the breath. The breath mantra is "hamsa". I used my very talented and musical friend, Aloki, for the model of this Saraswathi.

This is part of my contemporary goddess series. Yoga philosophy is that all women are the goddess and all men are Shiva. Exploring that idea, I have been doing portraits of women in paintings and woodblocks representing them as the goddess. The setting is Little Bear Mountain at Shoshoni deals Yoga Retreat in Colorado.

Mokuhanga is a Japanese labor intensive, old school method for woodblock printmaking. The woodblock is hand carved and then, hand rubbed onto mulberry paper using watercolor inks and sumie. I hand painted this Saraswathi.
