Most of the wood for my boards originates from trees on the land that my grandparents left as their legacy. I have harvested and dried the lumber before bringing it into my wood shop to carefully craft these boards. Each has been sanded from 60 grit all the way up to 400 before 3 coats of natural oil and a coat of wax is applied.
fh vinegar, and wipe dry with a paper towel. Then with a periodic re-oiling with common mineral oil, your butcher block will remain pristine for years to come!
Because of their eloquent look, my wife uses the boards for both decorations in her kitchen as well deals as for serving trays.
Here is some information on Wood vs. Plastic cutting surfaces (https://commonsensehome.com/wooden-cutting-boards/):
In a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin, they tested bacteria known to produce food poisoning – Salmonella, Listeria and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. These bacteria were placed on cutting boards made from seven different species of trees and four types of plastic. All the wooden boards consistently outperformed the plastic.
The scientists found that three minutes after contaminating a board that 99.9 percent of the bacteria on wooden boards had died, while none of the bacteria died on plastic. Bacterial numbers actually increased on plastic cutting boards held overnight at room temperature, but the scientists could not recover any bacteria from wooden boards treated the same way.
